The PLC ABS Lamp Module is a ruggedized alternative to replacing the ABS controller in the cab of a tractor.  When retrofitting a truck to pull a trailer, costly modifications are needed which includes purchasing and installing a new ABS module for the cab.  The PLC ABS Lamp Module eliminates the need to spend hundreds of extra dollars on expensive ABS equipment. It gets installed into the cab, is connected to the 7th pin of the 7-way trailer connector, and has a lamp output which can then be routed into an installed light bulb in the cab or the driver’s instrument panel directly.  Installation is a fraction of the time and a fraction of the cost.

These capacitors are available in a variety of configurations, and are well-suited for common applications in the industrial, lighting, consumer and alternative energy markets. Three low-profile surface mount series are offered in voltages up to 450 VDC including low impedance models with up to 5,000 hours life at 105ºC. Seven radial-lead versions are available with up to 10,000 hours life and voltages to 500 VDC. Several of these series also offer high ripple current capability for more demanding applications.

However, there was a tradeoff with voltage, capacitance and ripple current so this was not an optimum solution until the pencil capacitor was designed. With the smaller diameter, longer length and laying horizontal on the circuit board, this provided what the designers were demanding.

By laying the capacitor on its side, a lower height is achieved making it
attractive for low profile applications. Diameters range from 9 to 12.5mm.

Multiple capacitors can be put in parallel to achieve much higher capacitances
and ripple currents but without increasing in height.

Advantage #3:  High Capacitance in Small Size
With a low height dimension, large capacitance is available up to 270
microfarads.

When compared to other capacitors like ceramic, film and tantalum,
aluminum is the lowest cost per microfarad.
